How It All Works

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a process of self-discovery and personal development. It aims to encourage emotional growth and a greater sense of autonomy and effectiveness. Whilst psychotherapy is important for those experiencing acute distress it’s also appropriate for anyone who’d like to improve their quality of life.

The process of psychotherapy seeks to deepen your understanding of the meaning of your experiences, behaviour, relationships, habits and patterns, thoughts and feelings, desires and disappointments - essentially the whole reality of being human. Insight into what things mean to you can often lead to revealing thoughts and experiencing feelings about which you have previously been unaware.

The nature of the therapeutic relationship seeks to make it possible to face issues that you may have buried, denied or have been too painful to address. Whilst no-one enjoys pain, it may be necessary to go through it to move ahead.

Besides helping you to understand yourself better, psychotherapy is also concerned with helping you to work through issues from minor irritations to serious distress with the intention of making a lasting positive change.

Deciding on therapy

Rather than choosing a therapist at random, some questions you might want to ask yourself before deciding on one are:

  • What changes do I want to make to my situation?
  • What do I want to achieve from therapy?
  • Am I prepared to make a commitment to therapy?
  • Am I prepared to be open and honest with a therapist?
  • Would I prefer to see a male or a female therapist?
  • Is the ethnicity of the therapist important to me?
  • Am I prepared to take a risk?

Choosing a therapist is personal. You may have to see more than one therapist before finding someone with whom you’re comfortable. It’s important to feel at ease, heard and understood by the person you choose to work with. Different people work in different ways and you’re welcome to ask me about the way I work and my professional background.

Confidentiality

You can be assured that our work together will be completely confidential. Not even your GP needs to know that you’re seeing me — unless you want them to.
