The Tiger, The Forty Metre Tower + Me
Some of my most rewarding experiences have involved doing things that I haven't wanted to do in the first place! Therefore, sometimes we need to take a risk. Which is what I did when I made up my mind to sit down with a tiger in my lap. It wasn't a huge risk but a risk nevertheless.
Or the time I took my courage in my hands and abseiled down a forty meter tower — which was more terrifying than hugging the tiger! Also not a huge risk, but it took every ounce of nerve that I could muster.
Choosing to do therapy can feel like a risk too but the result is well worth it as I found out when I abseiled down that tower!
I’m fortunate to work in an immensely rewarding profession and to learn so much from those I work with. For me, one of the joys of being a therapist is having the privilege of being part of another’s journey, working together towards a more fulfilling life for my client.
I have lived in several countries, which has given me an understanding of different cultures and ways of thinking as well as leading me to a wide-range of experiences both positive and negative.
Experience
I have worked as a therapist for many years and have a wealth of experience both personal and professional. Well qualified in my field, I continue with professional development to keep up to date with current ideas and practices.
I deal with a broad diversity of people and issues. Currently I'm working in the private sector two days a week at the Melbourne Clinic where I conduct group therapy and teach meditation, relaxation and psycho-education. The remainder of the week I work with my private clients. I have also worked at The Albert Road Clinic and Epworth Hospital.
Involved in public speaking in the areas of sexuality and child abuse, I've also designed and conducted workshops on counselling, sexuality/human relations, communication skills, drugs and alcohol, and HIV/AIDS.
I designed and presented the introductory sessions for the Drug and Alcohol (D&A) Certificate for General Practitioners with the Department of Community Medicine and General Practice for many years. My work in D&A counselling also included conducting support groups for people who have a family member involved in substance abuse and/or other forms of addictive behaviour.
I've also run programs at the Metropolitan Remand Centre and several prisons with both men and women. I was also appointed an HIV pre and post test counsellor at the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre.
